Close Shave?
Being the pilot and owner of a small charter flight service, Mark had learned the virtue of keeping his craft safe. After 9-11 we all learned a lesson, in how something as small as a box-cutter, can create major havoc.
A man had booked a charter flight, insisting on paying cash. While this was not completely unusual, it did fall outside of the norm. The day of the flight arrived, the man’s baggage checked without incident. However, scanning for weapons before a person boards the aircraft, was company policy.
At first, the man boarding objected, but when told there would be no flight without compliance to this rule, he obliged. Switching on his Garrett Super Scanner, Mark began the sweep. Upon passing the metal detector over the man’s jacket pocket, he got an alert.
Mark asked the man to empty the contents of his pocket, he produced a set of keys, laughing it off saying, “how silly of me to forget they were there.” Passing the scanner over the other side of the man’s jacket, he again got a register.
This time is was not over the pocket, but along the base of the hem of his coat. Mark asked him about this, the man said “I have a three inch, plate attached to my pelvis,” something was amiss; Mark knew the register showed only a two inch object.
Take off your jacket please sir, Mark told him. I am going to have to see the scar on the pelvis, as well. This seemed to unnerve the passenger, “Do you always hassle your cash paying customers, like this, “the man asked.
When the man took off his coat, Mark again, swept the suspect area. No signal. He then swept the jacket again, getting a register. About that time three men approached, one a security guard for the hangar, and two police officers.
When the passenger lied to him, Mark depressed a small obscure button on the pager he was wearing. This notified security. The security had called the officers. A policeman spoke to Mark, asking what had drawn his suspicion. When they found the suspect object, it turned out to be a single-edge razor.
Being a felony to try and smuggle weapons past security, the man went to jail. Mark had often asked himself, if he had only patted the man down, he probably would have missed the single-edge razor. What had the man intended to do with it? YOU BE THE JUDGE.
